                                                Social Media Incriminates Athletes

The issue I would like to write about for the final project would be how social media gets athletes in trouble. Yes, it seems silly but it happens all the time. The way athletes use social media some would think they have no brains. But, in the end athletes incriminate themselves on twitter, instagram, and other sites without even thinking they will get in trouble. Whether it’s a picture of the weed they have, a fight between their friends, or even Kenny Britt’s instagram sex video he posted then deleted.
I would research this issue very in depth, first starting with the way athletes acted back in the day when there was no social media. Of course they went out to party but overall athletes didn’t have as much burden as staying clean as players do now. It’s just the fact that everyone in today’s society is trying to catch these athletes doing something illegal. Plus, it doesn’t help that these athletes incriminate themselves because of lack of thought process before posting. Moreover, if an athlete has a certain political view, the media will slam him or her if some people find it offensive. For example, if an athlete is for Syria and against Israel and they post a picture on instagram the media will twist it and make that athlete look bad. Athletes get in trouble also for stuff that isn’t so bad but because they are held to a different standard then we as regular people are held too.

This picture is of Cardale Jones' twitter account. In which he got in a decent amount of trouble for posting this tweet.
More and more do we see NFL, MLB, NBA, and boxers get in trouble because they posted a wrong picture, they tweeted the wrong thing, or they curse off a fan on twitter. They are normal people too, but the fact that media plays such a huge role in today’s society that now athletes have to be extremely cautious. Back in the 1920’s to 1970’s no one had to worry about. If an athlete threw a party you didn’t have to worry about someone getting video footage or a fight breaking out. Now an athlete throws a party and a fight breaks out you best believe that fight is getting aired on Sportscenter that night. I plan to create an article for the sports section here at the Rutgers Newark Observer. I will use many articles to research my own developed article as well as read a lot of what players and people in the media think about this topic.
