For my final project I plan to make a video on
social media, Instagram in particular, and how it has affected today's world. I
will focus on both the positives and negatives of how it has changed society.
As a journalism student I plan on interviewing people of all ages and ask how
Instagram has affected their daily lives. I know numerous people, mainly
bloggers and photographers, who have made a living off of Instagram so I plan on
making a small documentary on how it has changed their lives. I will also
interview those who use Instagram on a daily basis, but in a less professional
way and see their views on it. I want to compare and contrast how people use
Instagram either as a distraction or as a profession.
On the professional level, I plan on interviewing
Jeanne Salvador, an Instagram fashionista who has basically made a living off
of blogging. Jeanne, also known as “The Grey”, has become a superstar in the Instagram world. With 113k+ followers, her college career of wanting to be a
nurse has turned a complete 360 degrees. Instagram has changed her life
completely, opening new doors of opportunity that wouldn’t have been possible
without it. I plan on interviewing her, asking about her life before and after Instagram. I want to focus on the positives and negatives of the app. Another
person I plan on interviewing is Christina Lau who is another fashion blogger
who has been professionally recognized on Instagram. She has also made a name
for herself. Currently working in the city, I want to follow her daily life and
show how Instagram is incorporated. Along with these two fashionistas, I plan
on getting a few more interviews with other people with a hefty amount of
followers, showing how powerful Instagram can be.
I will interview people who use Instagram on a daily basis but on a more casual level. Posting memes, pictures of food, and selfies, I will interview a few people on how their use of the app and why they post what they post. I want to get both sides, comparing and contrasting their arguments and point of views on Instagram.

Once the interviews have been shot, I will edit
them accordingly to create a documentary style video. It will include those
being interviewed, b-roll of them during their daily lives, as well as voice
over that will help push the video forward. I want my main audience to be media
professionals who are unaware of the power of social media. I want to open
their eyes and show how powerful this tool is and how to use it to its fullest
extent.
Instagram is growing faster and faster, having new
users each day. Whether posting a selfie or promoting a business, I plan on
creating a montage documentary consisting of multiple people giving their
opinion on how they use Instagram. As a photographer and a consistent
Instagram user myself, I use Instagram to help promote my work and get clients
to help further my career. Through Instagram I have been given many
opportunities to shoot with people I never dreamt of shooting with. Instagram
can be viewed and both a negative and positive light, and for my final project
I want to focus on both of those aspects.

I think this is a great topic to research further. Most people use and reference instagram without realizing that an entire community has developed around the app, with its own celebrities and fanbases. It is amazing how a person can become an online celebrity simply through posting images of themselves online, its something that the average user of social media can sometimes take for granted because they do not understand the dynamics of the online communities hidden within apps like instagram, so it will be interesting to see what you can reveal to people about it.
ReplyDeleteI would say that the reading from Sherry Turkle's "Alone Together" and other parts of it might help you with a general overview, or a jumpstart, for the project.
